The Dripping Springs Story
Back in 1853, the Moss, Pound, and Wallace families set out from Mississippi and Kentucky to build a new life in Texas. They followed an old stagecoach road into Austinβs Hill Country and ultimately found a beautiful spot with flowing streams, abundant wildlife, and beautiful views. They settled in and called it home.
By 1857, they needed a post office to support their growing community, which required them to choose a town name. Indiana βNannieβ Moss chose Dripping Springs, inspired by a particularly scenic spot along a local aquifer. Interestingly, this spot was a frequent gathering place for the Tonkawa Indians, who first inhabited the area. The tribe was comprised of several smaller bands, with Tonkawa meaning βthey all stay together.β
Dripping Springsβ location on the Austin-to-Fredericksburg road made it a convenient and popular stopping point, attracting visitors, business people, and ultimately, more residents. After a brief population decline during the Great Depression, Dripping Springs picked back up and has grown steadily ever since.
Today, Dripping Springs is affectionately nicknamed the βGateway to Hill Country.β While it has evolved with time, the town has held onto its quiet charm, pretty vistas, and welcoming nature, making it a wonderful place to live and visit.
At Oakwood Public Market, we hope to embody a bit of this remarkable history. Inspired by our foundersβ pioneering spirit, we imagined β and built β a new βhome away from homeβ for our community. We welcome our neighbors and friends to the Market as a place to gather and βstay together,β as the Tonkawa did. And we value the deep goodness and natural beauty of Hill Country life, which we hope youβll experience through Oakwoodβs heartfelt service and thoughtful offerings.
If youβre new to Dripβ (as the locals call it), welcome! We hope youβll love it here as much as we do. And if youβre one of those locals - Go Tigers!
